3 Ways of Establishing New Habits

Are there any ways of establishing of new habits?

Our habits can determine our success or failure in our life activities.

We are to watch what we meditate on and our thoughts as they soon become our words.
We are to watch our words as they soon become our actions.
Our actions soon become our habits.

Establishing new habits
Little hinges swing big doors. Focus on one habit at a time

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying “ Your net worth to the world is usually determined by what remains after your bad habits are subtracted from your good ones.

#1 Focus on one habit at a time

Success is determined by consistent positive achievements.   The ability to make progress is based on focus.   To progress with establishing new habits, we must focus.  When we can focus on one task at a time, the rate of success increases exponentially.   Focus on one habit at a time.

One of the major challenges faced by the mentally ill is being easily distracted.   Also inability to deal with constant changes that demands our attention can be an issue too.   Establish priorities.  That will be of great help in driving focus.  For those challenged with mental illness,  it will go a long way in aiding their recovery.

What new habit (not habits) will you focus on establishing now?

#2 Be in the Right Environment

Everyone likes a good, encouraging and supportive environment.   The mind is the seat of the creative power.   The mind needs the ambience of good to be creative.  Distractions can be…distracting!   Strengthening the ability to deal with distractions in the mentally ill person is therefore paramount.    The right environment propels good habits.

The mentally ill in particular, require an environment of good news in order to recover.  In a supportive environment where the mentally ill is made to focus only on those essential tasks that develop into new habits, the changes that will be seen in the improvement of health, will be remarkable.

#3 Stop Procrastinating

Walt Disney once said “ The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing”.   Get doing.  Do what you need to do…now.  That is the secret to establishing new habits.  The garage that needs clearing, clear now.  That gym you want to join, ring them now.  Don’t wait another day.  Once you prioritise, then get on with it.  That is how new good habits are formed in you quickly.  Nothing becomes a drag anymore.  Remember, no delays!

In closing,

My experience is that when I established the habit of consistently studying and meditation on the word of God, combined with responsibilities for ensuring that our new church plant went ahead without hitches, I was put on course for consistently building new habits that were beneficial in cancelling out old ones.  Establishing new habits is always a winner.

Which of the 3 ways of establishing new habits speaks out the most for you?  Why not share on Twitter what they are?

  1. Ha, I love the Benjamin Franklin quote. My bad habit is focusing on too many things. To be honest, it’s arrogance on my part to think I can do something like multitasking that defies common sense!

  2. I must admit that as a creative person, I am prone to having “too many ideas” in my mind and it can become overwhelming. However, I guess focusing on doing one thing at a time and ensuring each goal is completed before moving onto the next will contribute to me achieving my desired success. I also agree with you that a supportive and encouraging environment is key. Vital in fact. Thanks for these points.
