60 Sec Confidence Building – Spring Clean Your Mind
Spring is certainly in the air. This is the time we put away our woollies and our old winter gears, clean out our gardens, paint and brighten up our homes, and clear out some junk, aka spring cleaning! Whilst we are spring cleaning our homes, why not do something we have never done before perhaps? … Spring clean your mind.
The mind is very powerful. The mind governs our life. A lot of things in our lives emanates in our mind. For those challenged with mental illness, the mind can seem like an enemy. We need to take control of our thoughts and this comes with practice. Today, we are going to start doing an exercise which we can make a habit. After a while, you will be surprised with the results, believe you me!
So here is some exercise to spring clean the mind.
Do an inventory on your thoughts. The Bible tells us Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8).
##1 What you are thinking about, is it true?
If yes, proceed to the next checkpoint.
##2 Is it honorable?
What you were thinking in (1) may have been true. For example, you did something you were not supposed to have done. But it is not honourable? It sure does not make you feel good. If you are truly sorry and have repented, why dwell on it? Sin consciousness is not honourable. Be grace conscious. Put thoughts of sins and ‘crimes’ committed in the garbage bin!
##3 Is the thought right?
You want to tell a lie. The more you dwell on it, the more the lie becomes like truth to you. But lies only hurt in the end. Lies will never be right even if a million people said it. So don’t think on the lie, because you will eventually say it!
##4 Is it pure?
You ‘fancy’ the mechanic in the car garage. But he is married, even though he tells you he is unhappy. This is not even a ‘recycle bin’ thought. Hit delete and click ‘confirm.’
##5 Is it lovely?
Someone said you were ugly. Ever since then, 10 years on, you think about this every day. It is not lovely! So stop thinking about it. Put this thought in the thrash category immediately. Pay your own compliments. Join your own fan club. Forget it. It is not lovely.
##6 Is it admirable?
Your neighbour has bought a new SUV. You can feel the tinge of jealousy. And this has led to you feeling insignificant and unaccomplished. Another thrash can content!
##7 Is it excellent?
Whenever you think of an old friend, how karma will come back to them because of something they did that hurt you. In other words, you are bitter. That is not an excellent thought. And forget karma!
##8 Is it praise worthy?
Talking about someone else with your friends, is all the talk of praise of that person? Do you think you are better than them? They will never amount to anything?
Bin any thoughts that makes you feel low. Don’t dream of recycling them. Practise your thoughts to perfection. It will go a long way to emotional healing and improving your mental health. So what are you waiting for… get started with spring cleaning your mind.
