5 Lies Satan will tell you about Mental Illness

Christians can find their faith taking a battering when faced with challenges such as mental illness.  Mental illness carries a dangerous stigma which often feeds the lies that ultimately affect faith.  One thought is that it is often felt that drugs and ‘reckless’ living leads to mental disorders.

Firstly this is not always true.

mental illness lies
Satan’s lies are full of air – do not be intimidated by them!

Secondly, if it were so, is not the Church the place of restoration?  I rest my case.

If you find yourself struggling with your faith, refuse to listen to any lie from Satan.

Here are some lies Satan will try to trick you into believing so as to trap you in guilt, fear and condemnation:

#1  Mental Illness Is Because Of Sin

Has not sin been dealt with on the Cross?  The Bible tells us every sin was nailed to the Cross.  Therefore it is illegal for any Christian to think they are in any predicament because of ANY sin!

If we sin, all we need to do is ask God for forgiveness.  That settles the matter.

Jesus wants us to be righteousness conscious and not sin conscious.  Sin consciousness keeps us in bondage.  And why on earth would God use the tools of the enemy, Satan, to punish His kids?

#2   You Are Under A Curse

What curse could any Christian be under?

Romans 5:17 tells us that we must receive the gift of righteousness.  Righteousness is a gift available to every Christian.  That gift gives us a free ticket, free access to come before the Throne of grace with boldness.

Because when God looks at us, He sees Jesus.

Again, every curse was nailed to the Cross.  Generational curses only exist in our mindset and because we keep confessing generation after generation ‘so and so runs in the family’!  That is the simple truth.

The minute you change your mindset, the minute Satan knows that thing running in the family has ended.  Why? Because you know your rights in Christ!

#3   You Are Not Studying The Word Enough/You Lack Faith

Of course, the Word is our defence.  Of course, the Word is our insurance policy against needless troubles in life.  Of course, the Word, is our ‘Get out of jail card’ when faced with challenges.

As long as we keep condemning ourselves that we are mentally ill because we are not serving God enough, or lack a rich fellowship with Him, we will stay in a perpetual cycle.

All we need to do is come under the shadow of His protection.  Build our faith because faith comes by hearing  (Romans 10:17)!  Eat the Word in the same way we eat food to be strong.  If the devil accuses you, get your Bible from under the pillow and study it.  It is simple.  Not a matter for negotiation or guilt!

#4   You Are A Failure

This is one of the biggest lies that Satan can ever tell you.  You are made in the image and likeness of God.   God is not a failure, so how can He make failures?  Does not make sense.   Saying you are a failure is an illegal statement!

Start meditating on the beautiful things that God says about you.  Get the book ‘Meditations and Confessions for people facing Mental Health Challenges’ by E. Onah.  In this book are beautiful words of what God thinks about you.  See yourself in God’s mirror and not Satan’s.

#5   You Can Never Get Better

This is where you begin laughing! This is Satan’s ridiculous lie to keep us sick.  Who says you can not only get better but get well?

If only we can take the Bible for what it says, we all can sleep well without a care in the world.  The Bible lets us know we must cast our cares unto Him (1 Peter 5:7).  To cast means to throw!

So believe what He says especially when He says ‘Is there anything too hard for Me?’  (Jeremiah 32:27).   Take what God says at face value and smile with expectation.

Read ‘Defying the Odds – One Man’s struggle and victory over mental illness and his wife whose trust in God never failed’ by Zoe A Onah.  This book will show you that with God, all things are indeed possible (Matthew 19:26).

And what God does for one, He can do for another.  And if He has never done it before, why can’t you be the first?

If you have been blessed with this post, please go ahead and share;  Open the prison door for someone locked up by Satan’s lies.  Thank you.

  1. I found your article very inspiring. However, you asserted a few points that aren’t supported in scriptures.

This verse demosntrates that mental illness can actually result from sin. “The Lord will smite you with madness, blindness and with bewilderment of heart” (Deut 28:27-29) “God will send upon them a deluding influence (delusion) so that they will believe what is false” (2 Thess 2:11).

And, in response to your assertion about generational curses. God warns that He is “a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.”

Although its comforting to believe all the points you’ve made, they don’t seem to be in accordance with scripture.

    1. Thank you Marley. With Generational curses, further in the Bible, we see the verse you quoted was reversed:

“Yet you say, ‘Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. – Ezekiel 18:19 and 20

      Also in Deuteronomy 24:16:

Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin.

      In 2 Chronicles 25:4:
But he did not put their children to death, according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, “Fathers shall not die because of their children, nor children die because of their fathers, but each one shall die for his own sin.”

      Also see in John 9:1-3

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.

Above all, because of sin was why Jesus came. The veil in the temple was torn meaning we had direct access to God! Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law. (See Galatians 3:13). As long as you are saved, you are not under any curse. The verse in Thessalonians is not referring to the saved

The Bible in Timothy tells us what God has now given us… a sound mind.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
