5 Must-Do things before you go to Bed

It’s been a long day.  And you just want to hit the bed.  However, you find that sleep does not come cheap.  You are restless.  Or you even have nightmares.  Or you find yourself counting sheep at best.

Must do things before bed

Apart from making your bedroom or environment conducive for sleep, turning off those gadgets that keep sending notifications, and the usual, what MUST we do before we sleep?

Here’s the things to do before bed:

1  Don’t go to bed angry

Do not go to bed angry.  Yes, we have said this 1000 times before on some blog post here.  Well, here is the 1001st time!  It has got to be said that going to bed angry affects our quality of sleep.  Ultimately, if we keep going to bed angry every night, it will begin to affect our health.

Choose the right thoughts before you sleep.  Your mind is a garden.  Don’t allow any weed to grow there especially anger weeds.  Forgive and forget literally.  Choose to remember, you will pay.  Quench any bitterness seeds before they even germinate.  

Don’t spend the night going over a dialogue that upset you or hurt you even.  Each time you remember it, you find yourself boiling over more and more.

Also remember, that your environment has ‘memory’.  Believe it or not, your furniture, and all the things you have in your room absorb all the words you keep speaking.  (We will talk more about this another time).  So if you have been saying angry things, the environment begins to become non conducive and peaceful.  And this affects your sleep.  Don’t overlook this…please!

2  Clear your mind

Before you sleep, is not the time to make phone calls where you gossip and listen to rumors.  Those things will affect you.

Also forget about the disappointments and anxieties of the day.  Carry no regret into next day’s account.  Tomorrow is another day to make things right.  The mistakes of today are just the springboard you need to propel you into a better future.  So forgive yourself too.  Tell yourself that opportunities are coming your way.  Blunders will make you better not bitter.

In Lamentations 2:19 it says pour out your heart to God. Release the burdens of the day.

3  Meditate

Meditation is nothing new.  The Bible says in Joshua 1:8 to meditate on the Law day and night in order to have good success.  Before bedtime is a good time to meditate.  

4  Refuse fear

If you meditate on the right things, you will not be fearful of the night.  You will not see night as the time when you ‘usually’ have nightmares.  Meditation fills your mind with the right things.  And invariably what is in your mind usually tells the quality of sleep you will have.  If you are meditating on the state of the world and terrorism, your dreams may not be one that will encourage you but frighten you. 

Forget about the nightmare you had last night or some time ago.  In fact, go and read what to do after a nightmare if you keep having nightmares!

Never be too tired to pray.  It is a time to open up to God.  It is a communication line.  If you often feel lonely, prayer will reassure you that you are never alone.

Remember too, God never slumbers nor sleep.  So if He is not sleeping, why should you give up on your sleep?  No point, the two of you being awake.  So go to bed safe in the knowledge He will sustain you.  Believe it and see how much at peace you will be!

5  Be thankful

No matter your day, be thankful and grateful.  You made it through the day.  It may not have been what you planned, but you got through it.  Successful people are always thankful.  So if you want tomorrow to be a success, be thankful!
