Be Ever Happy – Avoid these pitfalls
Being happy is a process rather than an event. I went through a period of depression and much worse –psychosis over a period of time. Being self-absorbed was a hallmark of that period in my life.
Here are a few tips on what to avoid to keep happy.
1 Never let criticism or fear hold you back
Do something others will not try. Soon enough people will talk about you. Generally not in a nice way.
The only way to avoid judgemental comments is to act in the way others do. That’s not living your life but the lives of others. A sure recipe for unhappiness.
See your being a discussion topic as a sign you are on the right course. Your course is the happy one for sure.
2 Never hold out for the big dream
Even if you come out with the brilliant idea, would you be able to carry it out fully? Do you have the funding? Do you have the skills?
One thing you do have is plenty of small ideas. No need to hold out for that big dream when you can act on your small ones.
3 Never equate possession with satisfaction
People get a buzz from new purchases. The satisfaction of a new possession is always temporary. The only way to keep that sort of satisfaction to be continually making purchases. This addictive cycle never guarantees long-term satisfaction.
Lasting satisfaction comes from doing. The best way to feel good about yourself is to help someone. Knowing you have made a difference in someone else’s life is a satisfaction that lasts forever.
This is also addictive – in a good way. Life is about people, not things. Perhaps that’s why memories are more important to children than things.
4 Never mistake advantage for achievement
Real achievements are founded on merit. No one can take them away.
Making others look bad to get ahead can only get you so far. This depends on how you play to the whims of others. The same way you succeed is the same way you can fail in a most humiliating manner.
5 Never wait
Life passes you by as you wait.
The way to get ahead is to act now.
Doing something about your circumstances is better than passively waiting for help.
6 Never think you are unhappy
Accepting the suggestion that you are unhappy gets you to focus more on things that could make you unhappy.
Let’s do a little exercise.
Shut your eyes.
Imagine someone has the power to take away everything and everyone that is important to you. Now that power has been exercised.
Would you give anything to have all that back? Would you realise that what you had is so much more important than what you did not have? Definitely.
Now open your eyes.
7 Never forget to be last
Everyone wants to be first. There will always be people who are smarter, sharper, better funded and better networked but they don’t always win.
So many people in the world give up. So many people in the world waver. Be the last to give in. Be the last to give up on yourself. If you are not successful, you still win.
