Brokenness
by Tonya King
Brokenness.
A word that some see as a negative. But as a follower of Christ, we need to redeem this word.
We cannot be whole until we have been broken. Brokenness is essential.
It is impossible to see that we need a Savior if we are not in a place in our lives that allows us to see that need. When we are self-sufficient, self-dependent, we have no room for Jesus.
It is not until we reach the end of our self that we can see a need. We need to be broken.
We need to be in the pit, at the bottom, without a flashlight to see how dark our lives have become. If we do not reach the bottom, we cannot look up.
We love to live like we need no one. We are the king of our castle and we can do everything by our own power. But, living like that is exhausting.
How much can we really do outside of Jesus? The answer…nothing. We live like fools if we think we accomplish anything on our own and it is usually in this self-inflated attitude that the fall comes.
And when it comes, it can be ugly. Everything comes crashing down, our relationships fail, our finances crumble, our job is lost, our family is in ruins, the cancer came back.
Anything unexpected can lead to our downfall. This is when we are broken, and, in our brokenness, we call out to Jesus. We realize He is the one we need. He is the one who can restore and make whole.
He is the one, who, even in our worst situation, offers us strength and hope. We find calmness and love in His arms. And yet, there are some of us who, even in our darkest times, refuse to call on Jesus.
Why? Because we cannot see that we are broken.
We refuse to acknowledge what is evident all around us. It is in these times that Satan can get a toehold in our life and eventually, turn it into a stronghold.
We are now bound in our brokenness and feel that there is no way out. We become hopeless in our hopelessness and all the while, Jesus is waiting.
He is calling to us… we cannot hear him because our circumstances have drowned out his voice. And, then, we realize where we are, and what has become of our life.
We are awakened from our stupor and we remember our Savior. We call His name and He hears. Our situation may not change immediately, but we now have hope.
We are no longer bound to our circumstances. Satan’s stronghold is broken, and we have breakthrough.
It is now that we need to hold on tight to our Lord and allow Him to move in our lives.
