Fear, Anxiety, And Worry
Fear, anxiety and worry are close relatives. Fear is the most crippling of them.
It was fear that defeated the Assyrians when King Sennacharib of Assyria came against King Hezekiah after forcing a ransom of all the gold and silver in the House of the Lord and King Hezekiah’s treasuries . The Angel of the Lord went through their camp and killed 185,000 so that when the living arose early in the morning the sight of the dead bodies made them return home in fear.
In Desert Storm a shock and awe offensive was used by the US army to decimate a well-equipped, well-entrenched and numerically superior Iraqi army in Kuwait. The Iraqi army was then the third largest modern military army in the world.
Anxiety is the next most crippling. It eats away at our focus on our purpose even when we have been disciplined enough to make priorities and follow them. The Bible tells us not to cast away our confidence which is of great reward, so that after we have done the will of God, we may receive the promise.
Worry is the foothold for anxiety and fear to be reinforced in our lives. Jesus told His disciples “….stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater [in quality] than food, and the body [far above and more excellent] than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?.“
I wrote Meditations & Confessions for People facing Fear, Anxiety and Worry by E. Onah as a follow up to Meditations & Confessions for people Facing Mental Health Challenges by E. Onah because I believe fear, anxiety and worry are major causes of mental health problems. Fear causes self-destructive actions. Anxiety causes very damaging mistakes. Worry can take a perfectly good cause and destroy it.
