Helping someone who is suicidal Infographic
Suicide is an all too important subject we cannot ignore. Every suicide affects 6 other people.
Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death (source: Wikipedia).
One DOES NOT have to be mentally ill to think about suicide even though many people who die from suicide have been challenged with mental health issues.
Many times, the one who is having suicidal thoughts does not really want to die. Many are feeling overwhelmed with life challenges or find life very difficult to cope. WE MUST NEVER THINK THEY ARE NOT SERIOUS ABOUT DOING THE ACT, HOWEVER! Do not think they are attention seeking either.
And even if they are, so what? Are you going to leave things to find out? It could be a very devastating discovery if you take that chance.
Remember suicide is a difficult topic to discuss. So if someone says to you even in jest that they want to kill themselves, don’t pass on the opportunity to do something or seek help for that person. Speaking is a small step but probably the hardest part for the individual.
Don’t assume that there is nothing you can do to help someone who says they want to kill themselves. And you do not need to bear the ‘burden’ of the secret alone. You can talk to someone who is a professional capacity, a mentor, pastor, someone that can help.
Even if that person is very close to you, do not take them from granted. Remember, the important thing at that time is to save a precious life!
Be careful too of every word you say. Time is ticking and precious, so watch your words. Do not say things like “life is tough for everyone”, “ why should you think this way?”, and so on.
Please share this post and help someone who may need it someday to help a person who is suicidal!
