How to have a good night’s sleep

A good night’s sleep does your health a lot of good.  Your day starts off  better with  a good night’s sleep.  You can be more energised for the day with a positive mind-set after a good night’s sleep.

Zoe always says that when it comes to sleep I am off like a light.  That is so true.  Before my head has hit the pillow I have already started to float into sleep. Here are a few tips to having a good night’s sleep that have worked for me.

have a good night's sleep

1 Get physically tired

When you are physically tired getting to sleep is easy. Think about it.  If you are not used to active children, being with them draws a lot of energy out of you to remain engaged with them.

Moving or delivering things is another activity that is bound to get anyone physically tired when engaged with for longer a couple of hours.  Engage in exercise.  Become more mobile.  Incorporate more action into your day.  Example, use the stairs instead of the elevator.   There has never been a time I was physically tired that I have failed to get a good night’s rest.

2 Keep the bed only for sleep

Keeping the bed as a place where you only sleep helps in a good night’s rest.  When your mind associates the bed only with sleep, a good night’s rest is an easier deal. When my bed is neat and tidy I most often find it easier to get a good night’s sleep. This usually a result of my not doing anything apart from sleep on it. Thanks to Zoe for getting me into this important habit.

3 Keep to regular sleep times

Having a regular pattern of sleep helps with a good night’s rest. When your body is used to a specific time for sleeping, it becomes easier to have a good night’s rest. My father had a regular time for sleep  which helped us maintain sleep curfews when we were growing up.  I suppose that is why in the UK there are limits to the times construction work can have noisy operations going on.

4 Turn off phones, TV, all electronic equipment

Using electronic equipment stimulates your mind. When you have televisions and mobile phones around you, you are pulled to them. Mobile phones in particular are the most intrusive to our privacy with many alerts and possibilities for intrusion into your thoughts. Distractions can affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

5 Value your sleep time, a good night’s rest

If you do not recognise the value that your sleep has in ensuring that you function properly you will not give it the protection it deserves. If you schedule sufficient sleeping time you will most likely get a good night’s rest. When you value your sleep time you will make an effort to ensure that you do have a good night’s rest.
