By Jeremy Divinity

I want to start this post off by stating the definition of wellness. Today, there are many misconceptions and misunderstanding on the meaning of wellness. As well as its correlation with improving mental health.

The definition of wellness is the result of your personal initiative by seeking a more optimal, holistic and balanced state of health.

In layman terms, wellness is the state of being healthy.

Wellness is also the realization of your true potential. On the positive end of the spectrum, wellness is living a happier, healthier, and better life. It is the knowledge of your body and how to keep it healthy. All things that are important when battling mental illness.

As the saying goes that your health is your wealth and it couldn’t be truer. Especially for those of us who have battled past or present symptoms of mental illness.

Wellness often leads to an increased well-being, the two go hand-in-hand.

Well-being is the measure of how well your life is going. Every aspect of your life influences your well-being. Including your social circumstances and your community. Your well-being also influences how you think and feel about life. To judge your own well-being you can ask yourself some of the following questions:

Is your quality of life substantial? Do you have positive or negative thoughts? Emotions? What is your level of life satisfaction?

Wellness and wellbeing are important to mental health and recovery.

Nature and the outdoors can have positive effects on your mental health and wellbeing. There’s something about fresh air, vitamin d, and a good breeze. I’ll term it “nature therapy”. By spending more time outside you will be more equipped to fight off depression, improve your mood, and heal.

#2 Take Care of Your Body

While it may seem easier to stay stagnant, be mindful that your physical health impacts your mental health.

If you don’t take care your body, the negative consequences can be large. That is to say, you don’t have to be a gym rat but start building active habits.  Take a jog, walk around the block, play sports with the family.

These are all things you can do to increase your activity level. This also includes your nutrition and eating as clean as possible. A healthy diet can help reduce symptoms of mental illness, giving you a better sense of well-being.  So drink more water and watch what you eat.

In the workplace, more companies are placing an importance on the well-being of their employees. They are doing so by providing services such as gym memberships, healthy snacks, and ergonomic friendly workplace.
