Mental Effects of Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been practiced for centuries. Thank God that some brave women have voiced this butchery to the face of the earth.
This hideous practice is a crime against humanity, the ghastliest act of indignity towards a woman. There are ladies in Africa and Asia crying out today because of the mental effects of female genital mutilation.
Our voices must be louder in order to stop this barbarism all together. This is the 21st century someone, not the Dark Ages! In the West, there are laws banning outright FGM. But in Africa and Asia, the voices of some are still being muffled.
Before we talk about the mental effects of female genital mutilation, let me share my own story or near brush story with FGM.
There are many types of Female Genital Mutilation. Type 2 excision is the removal of part of or the entire clitoris. In my country in Africa, I remember growing up thinking that excision was something to be proud of as a girl.
Can you imagine? Would you believe me if I said I even saved my pocket money for it? You see, I had been conditioned, indoctrinated, from as far as I can remember, that this practice made you distinguished as a woman.
In fact, I so wanted to be ‘cut’ because all girls of my age were boasting about it. Oh, how ignorance leads many astray.
It was usually the old women who did these mutilations. They use precarious instruments. Of course, these women have been through the same as girls.
Why do they continue it though? Culture binds them to FGM alive. The goldsmiths make the knives especially for the cut. These knives are small and very sharp. Back then, hygiene was not even taken into account.
Even today, there are risks of spread of blood diseases like HIV. So if you were thinking about sterilization that is not even a factor of consolation. And there is no such thing as some herbal something used as anesthesia either!
Mutilations were done in groups. Dates would be arranged and given to the parents. It would be a countdown leading to the day.
The activities would be followed afterwards with a big feast. Parents would be so proud because if meant their daughters would be able to be married with dignity and respect.
A day was set for my cousin and me to be cut. Were we were so excited! It beggars belief. Three old women were assigned to do the deed that morning.
Once these old women appeared, you instinctively knew what they had come for! They had a way of dressing too for the occasion.
There was a girl from our neighborhood that was to be cut first, followed by my cousin. Suddenly, I got scared and hid behind a big tree watching from afar.
The first was over with a scream.
Next, was my cousin’s turn. She was accompanied by two ladies from the FGM team. She was undressed, laid on the floor and legs pulled apart. Her hands were pulled by two women pinning her on the floor.
I could hear her screaming even before the cut. After what seemed like an eternity of 5 minutes, she was carried by some women with blood gushing from between her legs. The blood was pouring like tap water.
I ran to my father. I was next. A terrible mix of fear, stress and shock had gripped me. My father saw the terror in my eyes.
Suddenly, he went to get his gun. He was ready to shoot to scare them. He looked so angry. The women ran away and I was saved.
This is no fairy tale, or should I more appropriately say, horror story. This is the reality of what happens even today. I was only eight years old when this incident happened. Eight years old!
Consequences of Female Genital Mutilation are not just short term in terms of high risks of infection and disease but also long term.
For some who have had FGM, sex can be very painful. There may be issues with childbirth too. Repeated urinary infection is also an issue.
Emotional and mental effects include:
- Anger and feeling of betrayal towards family members.
- Some eventually suffer from depression and have a higher risk of psychiatric diseases including psychosis later in life.
- Fear and post traumatic stress disease (PTSD)
- Inferiority and anxiety
- Hallucinations and nightmares
Today, my cousin is still suffering mentally and emotionally from the scars of the cut. Her entire clitoris was taken away.
She is in 60’s. Does not have kids. She is frigid and has no sexual sensitivities at all. She is married but is living a life of guilt, possibly from childlessness. For some, divorce is inevitable.
For my cousin, the emotional impact of FGM has scarred her for life.

The way and style of circumcising a man child at Gibeath-haaraloth was given by God as a must for a man child. Joshua 5:2. 2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. Any man child that was not circumcised was to be cut off from his people. The covenant of the flesh for a man is with ease to behold with no ill feelings or regrets without medication required afterwards in life. When God warned in a spiritual language and told Moses that the Children of Israel shall not mutilate girls in honour of the dead ( satanic sacrifice since there is no circumcision of girls in God), the message was well understood and was given in a spiritual language which bears two warning.
