Quote of the week – Who are you?
In Defying Mental Illness, we are very careful with our words. One thing we got to learn to do is not to be careless about words. To be mindful about we say. You don’t believe that our words have power? OK, even if you do, negative words often are more costly in the number of words used, or even in constructing our sentences.
Example, saying I am not happy has more words than I am happy
I am afraid I can’t help you, takes more energy and time than, I can’t help you, or even Sorry, I can’t help you.
So before we go off course with another lecture, (there are lots of posts on this site about speaking life-giving positive words by the way), let’s take a look at our quote above.
Saying you ARE mentally ill takes ownership of being ill. If someone was to give you a cobra when you asked for fish, would you take it? No, so, why claim ownership of something you are trying to get rid off.
The more you keep you saying it, the more it becomes yours!
So rather than say I have bipolar, say, I am challenged with bipolar. Yes, in this instance there are more words to say, but those few extra words are worth it. Don’t be defined by sickness or disease. Don’t allow others to define you either. You are not schizophrenic. Rather you are challenged with schizophrenia.
Well, food for thought. Think about it. Say it.
