Tell us a little about yourself

Diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  I was  sexually abused at 6 years. Parents didn’t believe me. Had to apologize to abuser. Lived life of shame/guilt depression. Started therapy which triggered so much of my childhood. I had to be hospitalized in and out for 9 years, medications, ECTs.  I did return to work after, but just couldn’t continue. Now on Government disability allowance.

What mental health challenges have you experienced?

Mostly stigma. I am regaining my confidence/self-esteem, not being ashamed of having a mental illness.

How did you get support for your mental illness?

My husband of 36 years has been my rock. Finding a therapist that was experienced in trauma therapy was key. Finding the correct medications.

Anything further you would like to share?

Starting my blog “living in stigma” in 2007,  was the wisest thing for me. It allowed me to share my thoughts, emotions and I received more support than I ever thought.
