World Sleep Day is March 15, 2024. World Sleep Day delegates and sleep health advocates across the world will take action in their local communities, clinics, and countries to raise awareness of sleep health. It’s time to explore and celebrate the importance of sleep for our effectiveness and proper function in our daily activities. Sleep deprivation is a major health issue. I know. One of my classmates met an early end about a decade ago as a result of sleep deprivation.

When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. This was about the first Jacob we hear about in history. Further down the line we hear – When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”

While certainly there are times sleep can be very costly, its importance cannot be under-estimated. Sleep is important for the repair of damaged body tissue. You can get all the nutrients required to effect repair, however, without the catalyst of sleep, all that is in vain. The timing and environment of sleep is also important. I am not in the medical profession but I can attest to all these from personal experience.

Productivity and effectiveness are not entirely the same. Someone also keeps letting me know that activity [being busy] and productivity are not the same either. It’s often not easy for the motivated person to discern between what is urgent for them and what is urgent for the ones requesting or demanding attention. A sense of urgency very often clouds the relative importance of competing demands. Very often, we cut on sleep when we are extremely busy. Sometimes we virtually eliminate in a 24-hour period, the very important element of sleep.

I have often wondered at the precise rationale for not holding suspects longer than 24 hours while initial investigations are being carried out by the Police in some western countries.

Sleep is essential for our productivity. Sleep is important for our mental wellbeing.
