Stay safe in the sun this summer

by Beautifully Bronzed

We all know the risks of over exposure to the sun.  However, many people are still ignoring advice from the professionals and staying out in the sun far longer than they should, and not using the right protection.

In 2012, the UK saw more than 2,000 deaths from melanoma and the number of melanoma cases is growing faster than any of the 10 most common cancers. This is largely down to the boom in foreign holidays over the past 40 years and, more recently, a big increase in the use of sunbeds.

Melanoma causes more deaths than all other skin cancers combined. Cases are rising at a rate faster than any other cancer.

Experts warn that even though more people are now aware of the dangers of too much sun, it will be a generation or so before the number of melanoma deaths starts to fall.

What should we do?

  • Use a sunscreen with a high SPF
  • Ensure you don’t burn
  • Spend time in the shade between 11:00 and 15:00
  • Cover up with a hat, T-shirt and sunglasses

Spray don’t lay

The best way to get an even all over tan is to fake it!   You can get that golden sun kissed glow without lying in the sun for hours. When you have a spay tan you should still follow the tanning rules as your spay tan will offer no protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Use a sunscreen

You will still need to use a sunscreen over your fake tan to protect your skin from UV rays.   You will need to reapply sun block that contains the right level of SPF every few hours to safeguard your skin completely.

Remember to apply sunscreen to your children’s skin too, especially around key areas like the back of the neck and ears, to prevent the risk of sunburn.   Not only is sunburn harmful but it can be extremely painful and it doesn’t look good.

It’s a cover up

Try to stay out of the sun when it’s at its peak during midday hours, this is when the sun is at its strongest.  The harsh sunlight could cause sunburn, which can lead to wrinkles, premature ageing and skin cancers.

Cover up with long sleeved t-shirt, hat and sunglasses if you can.   This might not seem appealing when the sun is shining as you want to show off your beautifully bronzed tan but it’s advisable that you wear loose clothing that protects your skin.   Choose lighter fabrics like cotton and linen to help you stay cool.
